Fig Tree Bay and the chapel on the hill

Protaras

Ayia Napa's quieter neighbour, ten minutes up the coast and aimed squarely at families. Fig Tree Bay is the postcard: shallow, sandy, with a rock island close enough to swim to. Above the town, at the top of a long flight of steps, the whitewashed chapel of Profitis Ilias is where everyone goes for sunset.

The bay is named after a single fig tree planted in 1700

Church of Profitis Ilias

A small whitewashed chapel on a rock above the town, reached by a long flight of steps. The climb is the point: the whole bay is below you, and it is the one place in Protaras worth being at sunset.

Do · Beach

Fig Tree Bay

Shallow, sandy and sheltered, with a small rock island close enough to swim to and back before lunch. It is the reason most families choose Protaras over Ayia Napa, and it is busy by ten in high summer.

Do · Swimming cove

Konnos Bay

A horseshoe cove in the pines between Protaras and Cape Greco, reached down a steep road and worth it. Clear, sheltered water, a single beach bar, and none of the frontage of the bigger beaches.
