The questions that come up most, from people planning a first week here. Still unsure? The form reaches a person.
FAQDo I need a car?
For the coast, no. Paphos, Limassol, Larnaca and Ayia Napa all work on foot, and the intercity buses between them are cheap and frequent.
For Troodos and the villages, yes. The buses that reach them run once or twice a day and barely at all on Sundays, and the best of the island is the part a bus does not go to.
Which side of the road do you drive on?
The left, as in the UK and Ireland. Hire cars are right-hand drive and their number plates are red on white so everybody can see you are new to it.
Distances are short: Paphos to Ayia Napa is the length of the island and takes about two and a half hours.
What currency is used?
The euro. Cards are taken almost everywhere, including in villages, but carry some cash for the smaller tavernas and for parking.
Can I cross to the north?
Yes. The crossings are open and you need your passport or ID card. It is a straightforward queue in both directions.
One thing to check first: most hire car insurance does not cover you across the line. Ask the company before you set off rather than at the checkpoint.
When is the best time to come?
May, late September and October. The sea is warm enough to swim, the light is long, and the mountains are walkable rather than baking.
July and August are very hot inland and very busy on the coast. Winter is mild, green and quiet, and the cities stay open even when some beach hotels do not.
Is the water safe to drink?
Yes, tap water is safe across the island. Many people still prefer bottled for the taste, and every taverna will bring a jug without being asked.
